Uminers, a company in cryptocurrency mining equipment and facility operations, today announced the start of construction on a new data center located in Ethiopia. The first phase of data center construction, slated for completion in autumn 2024, will operationalize a 100-megawatt capacity.
Batyr Hydyrov, President of Uminers, emphasized the strategic importance of the new facility: “The increasing complexity of mining necessitates greater investment in robust equipment. The industrial-scale mining for extracting the remaining bitcoins has never been more pertinent.” He further noted, “the battle for accessing sufficient electrical power is intensifying globally as the slowdown in miner sales worldwide is mainly due to the scarcity of installation sites and available power capacity.”
The data center first phase is expected to host around 24,000 high-performance ASIC miners, including latest models such as the Antminer S21, S21 Hydro, T21, and S19.
“Our actions align with the motto ‘Crypto needs more power’, a theme we have consistently presented at industry expos. The leadership at Uminers understands the trajectory of the industry and is strategically positioning the company to meet these evolving demands,” said Hydyrov.
According to a company representative, Ethiopia was selected for its considerable benefits, such as affordable, eco-friendly hydroelectric power, making it a suitable location for new data center construction.
This project marks a significant step in the company’s plans to enhance its global market presence and increase mining capacity. In addition to the Ethiopian project, Uminers is planning to expand its footprint to other countries in different regions, including Africa, the Middle East, and South America, a company representative revealed.
Development of a new facility is anticipated to not only enhance UMINERS’ positions in the cryptocurrency sector but also contribute significantly to the economic and technological landscape of Ethiopia.
